Movie Review Assignment (Freedom Writers Film)
This paper analyzes the depiction of teacher professionalism and student behavior in reference to the movie “Freedom Writers.” One message related to schools embedded in this movie is tolerance and understanding.
The students of Erin Gruwell loathed one another for no apparent reason. They had a mentality that hating one another was a way of living.
The movie revolves around how the teacher used professional education strategies to help the students, who were perceived as illiterate.
The coworkers of Ms. Gruwell had no deep concern for the students, and they even admitted that they only taught due to the lack of another alternative.
The students had no interest in learning, and their homes and families were unstable. In addition, many of them could not get along with one another, and they were either a member of a gang.
Nevertheless, Ms. Gruwell did her best to establish an excellent relationship with her students. She let them know that she wants to understand their situation, and she is making an effort to do it.

Today, a school is attended by learners of different ethnicities. Racial discrimination and diverse backgrounds have been a leading concern in many schools in America.
Students pick on one another and bully those from minority groups. Ms. Gruwell had no place for such instances in her class.
She scolded those who made fun of other students and helped students who were scolded to become emotionally well. To get to know her students, she played games with her students and asked them to open up during class talks.
This made the classroom feel like a place where they could be themselves without anyone judging them. She achieved this by making the learners realize that they weren’t different and bringing them together.
She engaged the learners in questions such as, “how many of you have lost a loved one to gang violence?”, “How many of you know a friend that is in jail right now?” and “How many of you have lost more than one friend or family member?”.
Such questions helped the learners realize that their peers were not ignorant of the outside world, and everyone has lost someone special.
Moreover, an educator must use teaching strategies to achieve more excellent learning outcomes in every classroom management.
Mrs. Gruwell used a variety of teaching strategies. Planning was one of them. She assessed her classroom of rowdy students and took the necessary changes to create a lesson that would captivate her students.
She conducted classes thoroughly and gave the students goals they were to achieve. She oriented the students to her lessons and maintained a good learning environment for all the students in her class.
Her learning environment was maintained by calling students out that made fun of the others, and she did things that the students would enjoy but still learn.
While other teachers thought these students were troubled kids and didn’t deserve to waste teachers’ time because they didn’t want to be there, Mrs. Gruwell effectively interacted with the diverse group of students she had.
She created mutual respect in the classroom that the learners were unwilling to give initially.
Teachers have a vital role in helping the students develop motivation in classroom management. Ms. Gruwell presented enthusiasm as a skill in her lessons and passed that enthusiasm to her students.
She did debates and planned arguments in her classroom that allowed the students to vent and have fun fighting for their side.
She created a dynamic in the school that made the students feel safe and at home and that, in turn, made the students excel at their work.
Her organization and conducting of lessons were outstanding and drew the attention of other students who desired that in other teachers’ classrooms.
She demonstrated the knowledge of many different strategies to get her student’s attention.

A teacher needs to understand the students in a classroom setting and use strength-based approaches to know the root of a problem and non-performance.
In a case where a student was slacking, M.s Gruwell would come up to them and ask them what would cause them to fall behind.
The student had a solid reason for believing she would allow them to stay in her classroom to work later instead of going home to whatever danger that was lying before them.
With her efforts in these students, she brought them up to the best of their learning capacity.
She had them feeling better about themselves and got the other faculty and administrators to recognize the true potential of these students.
In conclusion, Ms. Gruwell did all her work without any discrimination. She treated all students equally and showed them that they were all one.
Today, many international students from all over the world are being accepted into different universities. The movie demonstrated a significant teaching performance for multicultural education.
These methods are prominent and essential for teaching in a diverse class setting. With the application of these strategies, the racial discrimination perception in schools could be eliminated.
